Calculate the area enclosed between the curve y = 6x - x2 x –axis and the lines x = 1 and x = 5 using the mid-ordinate rule with four strips

John
h = $\frac{5 - 1}{4}\; = \frac{4}{4}\; = 1$

for x 1,2,3,4,5

Mid-ordinate are 1.5,2.5,3.5 and 4.5

Y = 6(2.5) – (3.5)2 = 21 – 12.25

= 8.75

X = 4.5

y = 6(4.5) – (4.5) 2 = 27 – 20.25

= 6.75

(for y ordinates)

Area using mid-ordinate rule

= h(sum of ordinates)

1(6.75 + 8.75 + 8.75 + 6.75)

31 sq. Units
