A Cirque is formed as a result of interchanging process of seasonal freeze and thaw of ice in winter and summer respectively. In winter, the snow collects in the hollows on the sides of the upland peaks and melts during summer. This interchanging action of freezing and thawing causes the rocks to weather and consequently break up. The breakup of the rocks results in the enlargement of the initial hollows. With time the firn field becomes established in the hollow and the ice advances by slipping down the slope. This lead to the formation of a crevasse known as bergschrund at the top of the firn field. When freezing occurs deep down the bergschrund, the back and side walls are then steepened and deepened by plucking. The plucked debris are then carried forward scraping the floor of the floor. This deepens the cirque.

If water accumulates in a cirque then a lake forms referred to as a tarn.
