i. The teacher should understand that a student’s readiness to learn is not solely dependent upon existing knowledge and skills since each learner brings his or her own unique background to the classroom. Teachers must therefore develop a relationship with the student in order to determine their current readiness level and a strategy to address current needs and those of the next level. This may involve additional community and governmental resources.
ii. The teacher should create a safe classroom environment by developing rules and procedures which provide an environment rich in routine and expectations. Such rules may include, prohibiting degrading and berating remarks and use of positive reinforcement to correct student’s behaviors. This will help the learner in developing an increased level of self-esteem and confidence.
iii. The teacher should let the learners know that you care about them and that you want them to succeed in class, in their examinations, graduate from high school to university, get a good job and succeed in all aspect of life. The teacher should also take time to explain issues and concerns with learners by providing student participation in class decision making process such as scheduling of tests, methods and materials for teaching and also scheduling instructions.
