BEHAVIORAL APPROACH THEORY.
The focus of this theory was on the organization itself,
and the proponents of this approach were concerned
with the behavior of individuals in an organization.
They therefore wanted to develop a theory to explain
the behavior of an organization and individuals within
the organization and to bring up the role of
management in harmonizing the two behaviors.
The contributors to this approach include Charter
Bernard, Herbert Simon, McGregor, among others.
Bernard: Emphasized the need of a theory to explain
the behavior of an organization verses the
management. He indicated that in many given
organizations, there are three groups of participants;
Managers - Are the decision makers and control the
activities of the employees.
Employees - Contribute their time and efforts in return
for wages and salaries.
Customers - Contribute money to the organization for
the goods and services.
Therefore, for managers to be effective, he/she must
accommodate the three groups in his/her management
and must have constant consultations for effective
management.
Herbert Simon: According to him, an organization
refers to the complex patterns of relations of human
beings. He argues that, task of decision making
influences the entire administration of an organization.
He observed that decisions which an organization
make for individuals should have the following
characteristics;
1. They should specify individual’s functions.
2. Allocate authority to individuals.
3. Limit the extent of behavior of individuals.
Generally, the proponents of behavioral approach try
to explain administration of the behavior of the people
within the organization. They wanted to fill the gap
between the theory and practice. They noted that,
formal organization are placing individuals in an
environment which allows him/her little control over
his/her world and makes him/her feels dependent on
the organization, e.g, they indicated that, one wakes
up and does not feel like going to work but they must
go because the organization requires them to work.
