Each semicircular canal works in concert with a partner located on the side of the head that has hair. There are of three types, that is :the horizontal canaland the superior canal on each side working with the posterior canalon the other side. Head rotation deforms the cupula in the opposing direction for the two partners resulting in opposite changes in their firing rates.
