Add water to the mixture in a flask.Ethanol being solube in water,it dissolves forming a missible solution.Octane and water being immiscible, they will form separate layers with the lower density octane floating on top of the higher density water solution.Using the separating funnel, separate the mixture by letting out the denser water solution first that will readily be at the bottom of the funnel leaving octane in the funnel.Since water and ethanol have close but different boiling points, use fractional distillation method to separate ethanol from water.Ethanol has lower boiling point(78.36) as compared to water, therefore,it will be distilled first, followed by water(100 decree celcius).
