-Wetlands provide economic benefits through fisheries and generation of products such as fuel-wood, building material, medicine, honey and various types of natural foods.
-Wetlands are important grazing areas. They are the only sources of water and pasture/fodder for the pastoral communities during the dry seasons.
-Wetlands are important sources of water for human consumption, agriculture and watering of livestock.They recharge wells and springs that are often the only source of water to some rural communities.
-Wetlands protect water quality by trapping sediments and retaining excess nutrients and other pollutants such as heavy metals.
-Wetlands provide critical habitats for a wide range of flora and fauna. Many species of birds, fish, mammals, reptiles, and amphibians rely on wetland habitat for breeding, foraging, and cover. Migratory birds depend on wetlands.
-Aquifers and groundwater are recharged, that is, replenished with water by precipitation that seeps into the ground and by surface waters.
-Wetlands are areas of great scenic beauty. They are a tourist attraction, form important recreation sites for game and birds watching, swimming, photography and sailing.
-Wetlands that occur along the shoreline of lakes or along the banks of rivers and streams help protect the shoreline soils from the erosive forces of waves and currents.
-Almost any wetland can provide some measure of flood protection by holding the excess runoff after a storm, and then releasing it slowly.
