i. Straight facing

-cut on straight grain of fabric
-edges to be faced are normally straight e.g square neckline, top of pocket, hem edge on a straight skirt or trouser
-the facing is cut as a strip along the selvedge edge [warp threads]
-length is normally the length of the area being faced plus seam allowance for two seams

ii. Crossway facings

-cut on the true cross
-facing can be used on any type of edge i.e straight or curved
-suitable for curved edges as it stretches to fit the curve properly.
-a cross way strip is a good example of a cross way facing.
-its used to finish hemlines, armholes, collars and cuffs joins
-used to make decorative edges

iii.Shaped facings

-cut the same shape and on the same grain as the area to be faced
-the facing is wider than the other two facings
-the facing cut as one of the pattern pieces of the garment
-are commonly used on yokes, necklines and armholes
