In five years to come
John's daughter will be n+5 years
John will be 3n+5 years
3n+5+n+5 = 70
4n+10 = 70
4n = 60
n = 15 years
Now, John's daughter is 15 years while John is 45 years old.
Ten years ago, John's daughter was 5 years old while John was 35 years old. The sum of their ages was 35+5=40 years
