Companies respond to environmental change in various ways. Many do monitor their environment effectively and capitalize on the opportunities and neutralize potential threats that occur within it through their scanning systems. Two reasons for companies not doing this effectively are given below:
1. Ignorance: Due to poor scanning many companies can remain unaware of threats and opportunities that may exist in their environment. This is poor (and high risk) business practice.
2. Delay: The second response is to delay action once the force has been understood. This is common in large organizations where bureaucratic decision processes often slow down any proposed action. In contrast small firm owner managers are often very quick to respond to market opportunities and threats; indeed they can often react too quickly without proper and prudent consideration.
