-it contains blood vessels umbilical artery, iliac arteries and umbilical veins)
- it joins the placenta to the embryo
- passage for nutrients from the mother
- passage of excretory substances from foetus to mother for final discharge
- gaseous exchange
- passage of antibodies from mother to foetus, for protection of foetus against diseases

1.Allow exchange of nutrients and oxygen from the placenta

2.Allow exchange of carbon dioxides and nitrogenous waste from the embryo to the placenta and into the blood stream of the mother

3. The blood of the mother does not come into contact with the blood of the embryo therefore there is no direct exchange of substances.

4. The placenta and umbilical cord allow selective exchange of substance such as
i)Blood cells
ii)Blood plasma

5. Other toxic substance in the mother blood cannot reach the blood of the developing baby

6.The embryo changes into a foetus after period of 4 weeks when most organs have developed.

7.The developing baby grows in the uterus in a uterine cavity filled with a liquid known as amniotic fluid .
