Domestication is the term used for all kind of animals that a human being has tamed and started to keep or rear for its mutual benefit. Aquaculture is one of the upcoming farming activity in Kenya that has seen the economy of the country rise, employment creation, improve food security and more so a permanent source of income. Most people used to neglect fish farming but currently i'am impressed by the speed they are moving to venture into the business.

According to my experience i have a group in my county that was funded through the economic stimulus programme (ESP) that have really succeeded through fish farming.
Here is a cross margin analysis for a person who want to venture into this farming practice as a business. Recommended pond size 300 metres square which can cost about Kshs 25000 to construct, 1000 fingerlings at kshs3 @ =3000, 180kgs feeds at kshs 60/kg =10800, miscellaneous kshs 5000. Total expenditure is kshs 43800. After 6 months you harvest your fish approximately 98% which is about 980 fish.

A fish goes at kshs150@ so the total gross amount is kshs 147000 less expenditure i.e 43800 your net profit is kshs 103200. Thus the business is worth in just a piece of land only 300 m square. Thus my advice to farmers especially with small pieces of land or those with wetlands that are not in use please lets embrace fish farming as a business and make use of that swampy area.
