The Kikuyu curse that stalks us

I was born a Kikuyu, not by choice but as fate would have it. You may not be a Kikuyu, but the same applies to you. No one chose where or which tribe to belong to. As a young boy growing up, I was taught to always look out for my family, to try to the best of my ability to provide for them. Not even once was I taught to steal as we are accused. It is true that we are ambitious, probably over-ambitious, but these are not qualities limited to our tribe.

In fact almost everyone has big dreams. I know that there are some of my tribesmen who have probably stolen from the state. They did so in their own personal capacities and not as kikuyus. Whenever they speak they always drag our tribe alongside them. By now you should know that it is a mere tactic as I will voice my stand on the ballot paper. They did not choose to be kikuyu either, so don’t put their injustices on me.

I am struggling to survive while they live lavishly and they call me brother. I did not choose to be Kikuyu but I can choose which country to belong to. I hereby choose Kenya so treat me as a Kenyan since it is my choice. If Kenya fails I will share the shame and if Kenya prevails I will bask in its glory for I agreed to its terms and conditions when I appended my signature so as to acquire a Kenyan Identity Card. I never took a Kikuyu ID and can therefore not answer for a kikuyu’s misdeed. I am not worried for myself but for my coming generation, do not curse them as we were.
