Unemployment is a common challenge to Kenya and many other countries. In fact, unemployment is a problem to both developing and developed nations. There is need therefore to engage in business as a form of self employment. Poultry farming is one of businesses that people can venture in to generate some income.

In this resource, I will stick to engage people in the raring of chicken as a business. This is because chicken is very common and easily available. Apart from that it has a ready market. In order to begin any business, one must carry out an in depth feasibility study. In this study the business basics are researched upon by the potential entrepreneur.

A day old chick cost about Ksh. 70 from Kenchick and about Ksh. 60 from Kenbrid. These prices are based at the current market rates in Mombasa County. The minimum amount one can buy is around fifty chicks. A box of fifty chicks comes with a free sachet of vitamin medicine in order to help the chicks grow properly.

Depending on the number of chicks one wants to invest in, a spacious place is of a paramount importance. The chicks should have enough room to roam around. It is better if one can create perches within the room. The room need to be well lighted and accompanied by proper ventilation.

The rooms are normally carpeted with sawdust. This is mainly for easy cleaning and also to avoid slippery floors. Apart from that, there is need to ensure that there is a little warmth within the room. There should be a constant temperature maintained. It should not be fluctuating.

Next is ensuring that you have adequate chicken feed. In case of one lacks chicken feed then the chicks may die and in the process send the

whole investment to the brinks. A sack of chicken feeds ranges from Ksh 3,500/- to about Ksh 4,000/-.
