The Luo community as depicted in the story has a strong belief in God or Ramogi who is worshiped at the foot of a hill.Chief Mboga prays at a sacred spot.

The people believe in their ancestors whom they beseech to intercede
for them to God in times of difficulties.

The chiefdom is hereditary and can only be inherited by the chief's son.It is for this reason that chief Mboga prays on the sacred hill,pleading with the ancestors to intercede to God to give him a son,a heir to the beaded stool.He promises the coveted bamboo hut to any of his wives who would bear him a son.
After giving birth,a woman remains in isolation for four days while under care of other women.During this period,the husband cannot see her.

The naming of a new baby takes place on the fourth day.Upon the birth of a baby boy,a drum booms four times,while that of a girl,three times.In the case of a heir(boy)the father names the child.The beaded staff is placed in the child's right hand and the chief's ornamental bracelet is put on his wrist.

ThansKgiving sacrifices are offered at the foot of the sacred hill upon the birth of a child.Celebrations are also conducted to thank the ancestors as evident when chief Mboga offers a bull to be slaughtered so that Owiny can celebrate with his friends and his sister on finding out that Awiti was his daughter.

Before a chief's son got married ,messengers are dispatched to help locate a suitable girl whose parentage was unknown like in the case of Awiti who was deemed an unsuitable wife for the chief's son.

In the Luo community,traditions,polygamy is an accepted practice. Mboga has nine wives and sixteen daughters.The wives have their own huts and the chief lives in the main large hut.
