(a) The region experiences low temperatures making it favourable for the survival of fish and for the preservation and storage of fish caught.

(b) The indented coastline especially in Britain, Norway and western Ireland with several fiords, provides sheltered waters for fishing ports and villages. The fiords are also suitable for fish breeding.

(c) The mountainous landscape of the region especially in countries like Norway, makes agricultural activities difficult. The people therefore have taken up fishing as an economic activity.

(d) The population has a high purchasing power for fish. This has provided a large market for the fish caught.

(e) The broad and shallow continental shelf favours the growth of plankton.
