• Nor referenced interpretation. In this type of interpretation, an individual score is compared to the average score of all learners who took the test. The mean score provides the norms against which individuals scores are compared.
• Criterion referenced interpretation. In this type of interpretation an individual score is compared to a pass mark or cut off point that is determined before taking the test, anybody who scores above the pass mark is said to have passed the test and anybody who scores below the pass mark is said to have failed the test.
