Thumb sucking is a common phenomenon in young children. It is the sucking of fingers by young children.
These are some of the causes of thumb sucking in Children:
1. Young Children suck their thumbs because it keeps them calm and comfortable. The habit may have started even when the child was still in the womb.
2.Children suck their thumbs when they feel scared. It helps them to manage fear.
3. Sucking thumbs helps children to fall asleep.
4. Sickness also contributes to the habit of sucking fingers.

Sucking in babies is a reflex action. That means, it is natural and something done unconsciously. They just feel to suck.
Sucking in newborns may indicate hunger. When the baby feels hungry it may start sucking thus communicating to its mother that it is wants to feed.
Babies may also suck their thumbs as a way of soothing themselves. As they suck they forget about the boredom they feel, they forget about feeling sleepless or tired. So, this way they can feel comfortable or call for sleep.
Babies feel secure as they sack. So, sucking their thumbs may be used to drive off fear so that they feel safe, relaxed and free from any sickness.
The thumb is also sucked just because of its accessibility to the baby mouth. It is close, strategic when swinging its hands and readily available. This is why its sucking may start accidentally but the event is that it develops to a habit.
