The play revolves around a disputed farm land between two groups namely:the Collective Goat farm and the Collective Fruit Farm. Each of these farms claims a stake in the valley. The Goat Farm Commune group is the Original owner who had relocated to other areas on orders from the government. The approaching Hitlers armies prompt their relocation. The Fruit Growing commune has demonstrated interest in the piece of land.A delegate from Tiflis-the capital of the Soviet State of Georgia-Has been sent to settle the dispute.
The Fruit Growing collective Farm has made elaborate arrangements of irrigating the valley so as to make it productive. They intend to water seven hundred acres of infertile land to grow fruits and vineyards. The delegate arbitrates the dispute and the land is awarded to the Fruit Growing Collective Farm. Arkadi-a singer is called upon to perform an ancient Chinese story about-chalk circle. This story has a bearing on the judgement just delivered and is meant to authenticate the ruling.
Arkadi proceeds to give an account of one irresponsible and inhuman governor George Abashwili. The princes, led by Kazbeki, stage a coup against the Grand Duke and his Governor. The Duke escapes but Georgi is arrested, beheaded and his head is fastened on a wall. The palace is in panic and Natella,in spite of her vain character, has to be whisked to safety leaving her treasured essentials and her son-Michael and the soldiers start to look for them.
Fortunately, the family's Kitchen maid Grusha, salvages the child. She flees to her brother's abode in the Northern Mountains, perused by the soldiers. She endures great suffering on the way, including hostile and uncooperative people. She finally gets to her brother's place but he insists that she has to get married to an almost dying man by the name Jussup. Jussup has feigned sickness to avoid taking part in the on -going war.The marriage is conducted by unscrupulous Monk.It is soon announced that the war is over.
Jussup on learning that the war has come to an end recovers, this causes tension for Grusha. Meanwhile the soldiers arrive at the Northern Mountains searching for Natella Abashwilli's son.Michael is grabbed from Grusha and taken to the Caucasian Village.
The play ends with Adzak presiding over the case of Natella Abashwili and Grusha. Natella would like to be the lawful mother of Michael in order to claim a stake at the families inheritance. Grusha on the other hand urges that Michael is her child. With wisdom just like Biblical King Solomon,Adzak draws a circle round the child and says that the one who pulls the child will be her real mother.Grusha fails to rule the child as she claims that she cannot bring the child up only to tear him into pieces. The judges rules in her favor.

Read the extract below From the River and the Source by Margaret A.Ogola and answer the questions that follow
(Solved)
The crowd hissed, such a thing was unheard of,Didn't a man own a woman's body and soul?Marriage was sacred and chik' saw to it that it remained that way through by a series of taboos that made it almost impossible to sever the union. However the insult had been great. To accuse someone of juok',witchcraft, even in jest was an unforgivable crime, and there had been precedents,if the woman and her people were determined enough to get separation. The people of Yimbo were a proud lot and their love for their daughter was known all round for they always came out in massive support of her at various ceremonies and functions. The only saving grace would be the high esteem in which they held their son in law ,Owour Kembo the chief.
"And where might he be?"inquired someone,so taken up had they been by Nyar Yimbo's oratory that they had failed to notice his absence."He went to a friends's funeral the day before yesterday and is due back today" Meanwhile i will teach that she wolf a lesson"This from Otieno her brother in law.She looked at him straight in the eye and hissed" just you dare!"He retreated at the pure venom in her eyes.Besides,he was afraid of his brother who had added scandal to all his other sins by falling to ever lay a finger on his wife.
She left without further ado and her children, forgotten in the confusion ran after her. This would never do.She turned and gently but firmly ordered them to go back and await their father's return.
"But mother......"started the argumentative Obura."No buts!just go back and do as i tell you."She left them and went swiftly on her way.The crowd stood mesmerized for a while before departing also.
