I remember a story of a young boy who, while being taken to school, was told by his grandmother to read all the books he could lay his hands on while at school, however much this looks unrealistic and funny, to say that the libraries in schools and colleges have been ignored is a gross understatement. The libraries have been ignored, abandoned and are being misused by the few students who find their way in, you will find students in the libraries who don’t use the available resources and concentrate on their class notes while some even busy surfing through the internet on their mobile handsets.

The public libraries are a disaster; they are very few and empty, without up to date-books and other resources, and the changes in technology with the coming of the internet and eBooks, I am afraid the concept of the libraries will be thrown to the bins.

Maybe if we look at the importance of these facilities we might re-consider how we manage and utilize these invaluable resource reservoirs.

1. The library enriches us with current information; contrary to popular belief that libraries are all about academics, they contain newspapers and journals that cover emerging issues affecting us and gives us ideas on how to deal with them.

2. Libraries provide all-round information and reading from different sources gives us a wider perception of concepts and points of view. They broaden our scope of understanding of a topic from the class work or lecture notes hence enabling us to not only pass our exams but also have a deep conceptualization of the topics we read.

3. Libraries boost our research projects and development of theses, this is done through providing us with relevant references and literature reviews, understanding the background information on the research areas we want to

work on. They also assist in preventing duplicate work as students can search for previous studies on these areas and compare with their intended projects.

4. Libraries are the best alternatives for needy students who cannot afford to buy books or meet internet costs of operations; they can borrow books from the library or read them from the facility at no extra cost. This is reason enough for us not to let our libraries degenerate.

5. Libraries contain a host of documentaries, novels and other books that could be read for fun and used for relaxation purposes.

6. Rather than studying from the hostels with all the music and noise, it is better to study from the library that provides quiet and conducive environment for conceptualizing concepts.
