Styles of reading

Surveying. This involves establishing the general view of information. It consists of two levels namely: book material selection level and selected book level. Book material selection level entails looking at the author, title, publisher's blurb, reviewer's comment, printing history, index, glossary and content page to establish the general view of a book.Selected book level involves looking at diagrammatic representations, signs and symbols such as highlighted texts, reports of a case study, illustrations and quotations.

Skimming. This style of reading is used when a reader wants to get the main idea or gist of information in a book. In order to get the main idea, a reader should read topic sentences. Topic sentences are usually written as the first or the last sentences in a paragraph.

Scanning. Readers use scanning method when looking for specific information. This could include information such as: statistical data, address of a place, historical date of an event and many more.

Light reading. This style is used when a reader is reading for pleasure and does not want to 'digest' the information. Such a reader utilizes materials such as storybooks, novels and entertainment sections in newspapers and websites e.g Kenyaplex.

Word by word reading. This style of reading is used when someone is learning how to read for the first time.This style could be used when a person is learning a new language. Here, a reader must be careful because there are new words being learnt.

Intensive reading. It is also referred to as critical reading. This involves a comprehensive, thorough and critical approach when reading. Materials read here include: journals,periodicals, reference books, books in the reserve and information stored in a library computer e.g a microfilm. Readers read for academic research and thus, actively involve themselves in critical interpretation and evaluation of information.
