When you look at the analysis of the examination bodies after a national exam has been done you see that children in urban areas perform better than children in rural area. This result is cause by various factors. Among them disparity in the quality of education offered to the children in all the areas of the country.

It is a general belief that children in urban areas are smarter than children in rural areas. This assumption is almost correct depending on how your definition of the word ‘smart’. One thing that must be noticed is that the quality of education offered in urban areas excluding the slum areas is higher than the education in rural areas. One such cause of this condition is the number of schools in each area. The number of schools in urban areas is larger than the number of schools in the rural area. There are many factors that lead to this inequality. One is that the government invests more in building schools in urban areas because of the high population. You will find about sixty public schools in an urban area and each school is overpopulated whereas in rural areas there can be even one school but still the school is under populated. Therefore the distribution of population affects the number of schools in an area.

Another factor that is contributing to the fact that there are more schools in urban areas than rural areas is the private sector. Normally a business man would sell his product in a place there is high demand. So private schools are built in urban areas because of the high demand of education and need for institutions of learning. The standards of living of people living in urban areas are assumed to be high so they are likely to be able

to pay the fees than the parents in rural areas.

In urban areas, the only way to get a decent job is to have an education. This has led to about 99% of the children being enrolled in school. The free education initiative has greatly encouraged this trend. Parents are more aware of the importance of their children having an education and being able to build better lives for themselves. In rural areas, there is a laxity I the awareness program. You will find instead children going to school they are still looking after the cattle or ploughing the farm. Although more and more children are starting to go school because the government has made it illegal to deny children a chance to have education the numbers are still low. Nevertheless progress is being made.

These days the flow of technology and innovations is from the urban areas to the rural areas. With this trend the children in urban areas are exposed earlier to emerging technology. This gives them a upper hand in developing and learning. They are more aware about what is going on in the world.
The competition level in urban areas is higher than in rural areas. This leads to the assumptions that children in urban areas must work harder to keep up and compete in the world whereas children in rural areas do not have the mentality that they are in a world that is very competitive.

Resources are not sufficient in rural areas. Because not many investors would want to build private school in rural areas, the task is left to the government. They must equip the schools with necessary tools. This has proved challenging. In urban areas you will find most if not all private schools have well equipped laboratories and libraries. The resources to learn are readily available. With this environment children in urban areas can’t afford not to pass.
