Greenhouse farming has not yet been adopted by many farmers in Kenya, but for those farmers practicing this method, the benefits are just wonderful. So, what is greenhouse farming? What are the advantages of greenhouse farming?

Greenhouse farming is a type of farming whereby specialized structures are used to grow crops especially fruits and vegetables. In these specialized structures, temperature and humidity is controlled which results to healthy crops. You have probably seen some of these structures made out of glass or plastic materials in some local farms in Kenya.

Greenhouse farming offers numerous benefits. Some of these benefits include:

High yield per acre

Growing crops in a greenhouse results to higher yields because the crops are grown in conditions that are suitable for maximum productivity. This usually results in maximum produce with just a small portion of land.

High Income
A lot of farmers practicing greenhouse farming are literary laughing all the way to the bank. As mentioned, green house farming offers higher yields per acre and farmers can sell these products and earn high incomes. Furthermore, with greenhouse farming, the crops are usually large in size and this is an incentive to sell at a higher price.

Ability to grow crops throughout the seasons
Greenhouse farming involves growing crops under controlled settings and therefore it’s possible to grow crops at any time of the year. This is totally different from traditional farming where you have to rely on particular seasons to grow crops.

Minimal cases of pests and diseases

Due to the specialized structures in which crops are grown in, there are very minimal cases of diseases and pests.

Farming of exotic crops

With greenhouse farming, you can grow any type of crop and be able to produce quality products. This is because of the controlled environment which you can manipulate to mimic any environment suitable

for any crop.

Food security

Greenhouse farming offers a solution to the food insecurity in our country. Our country has been faced with food insecurity for many years and greenhouse farming may just offer a solution to this. This is because with greenhouse farming, you are able to grow crops all throughout the seasons.

Solution to unemployment
There are a few cases in the country of young people, especially graduates who have dared to venture into greenhouse farming and they are reaping super profits from this venture. This can be a solution to the high unemployment cases in the country.

Greenhouse farming offers a lot of benefits if embraced. From offering solutions to unemployment cases and food insecurity, this is a practice that should be fully embraced in Kenya if we are to develop as a country.
