Hair is not spared when it comes to the changes that occur in the body during pregnancy. With the increased levels of oestrogen in pregnancy, one may experience increased thickness and amount of hair, as well as change in colour. Also, if the hair is oily, it may become oilier while it may become brittle if dry. These changes may cause the treatment to be different from when one is not pregnant.

The changes are temporary, they usually return to normal after delivery although rapid hair loss may be experienced a few months following childbirth. For some women, it may be frustrating when they have to deal with so many other changes in their body, but these changes return to normal after the baby arrives.

While it may be important to maintain an attractive image during pregnancy, it is likely that hair treatment chemicals are absorbed through the skin into the bloodstream. It is thought that this, in small amounts, are not enough to cause any harm to the unborn baby. However, since these chemicals are generally not evaluated for their effects on pregnancy, the risk for harm is unknown.

It is recommended to avoid using chemicals for the first three months of pregnancy to reduce the unknown risks. Similarly, permanent hair dyes should be avoided in early pregnancy. Hair dyes containing ammonia produce fumes which can be inhaled during their use with unknown effects on the unborn baby. Vegetable dyes such as henna may be safe during pregnancy.

If for some reasons, one must use chemicals during pregnancy, she should delay the use until after the third month in order to reduce risks. The chemicals should be used in a well ventilated area, not to be left on the head for longer than necessary, rinse thoroughly with water. The of a blow

dryer should present minimal risk to the unborn baby and mother.
