Summary

ABSTRACT
Scattered literature is harnessed to critically review the possible sources, chemistry potential biohazards and best available remedial strategies for a number of heavy metals. (Manganese, zinc, lead, iron, cadmium and copper). Commonly found in contaminated soils especially in agricultural soils due to application of manure, pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers among other sources.
Soil washing and phytoremediation techniques are some of the suggested methods of remediating the soils which were found to have heavy metals levels higher than the level allowed by World Health Organization (WHO), FAO, china, Kenya and India. Remediation of heavy metals contaminated soils is necessary to reduce the associated risk and make the agricultural land available for agricultural production. This also helps to enhance food security and scale down land tenure problems arising from changes in land use pattern.
This research involved determination of levels of heavy metals in selected farms in Eldoret. These farms were located along Eldoret -Ziwa road. These farms were in university of Eldoret, Mti moja, Kuinet and Merewet. The sample from university of Eldoret farm was marked as sample A. In Kuinet, two samples were collected. One sample was marked as sample B and the other sample was marked as sample C. the sample that was collected from Mti moja was marked to be sample D while that collected from Merewet was marked to be sample E.
This data was to determine if people from these areas were prone to poisonous effects of some heavy metals and also if there was need to increase these metals where they occurred in insufficient amounts.
