ASSESSING THE ECONOMIC IMPACT OF DEVOLUTION IN KENYA: OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGES
Abstract
Devolution has had a significant impact on Kenyan economy. The current devolved structure of Kenyan government was mainly triggered by the need to address some of the economic disparities across different regions in the country. Since 2013, when Kenya adopted this form of government after the general elections held in the same year, Kenya has been praised for some economic benefits especially in the provision of the basic services. However, there has also been some challenges that are worth noting. This paper discussed some of these economic benefits and challenges brought about by devolution in Kenya. The paper mainly concentrated on the economic benefits and challenges in resource sharing, health sector and water sector. By using desktop research, the paper was able to gather some secondary data concerning the economic impact of devolution in Kenya. Some of the sources that provided relevant information regarding the issue of study included journal articles, newspapers, internet articles, Kenya Bureau of Statistic reports among other secondary date sources. For instance the data collected could clearly show the current status of the healthcare sector in Kenya and also compared it with the former situation during centralized form of government. The major findings showed that devolution in Kenya has resulted in economic benefits to most of the Kenya citizens, especially the ones living in remote areas. The findings also showed that there are some economic challenges which need to be addressed in order to ensure a smooth devolution process. Various recommendations were made to address the challenges and also sustain the benefits. A conclusion was also made concerning the economic path in which Kenya should take.
