Porosity of the rocks.
Pores rocks contain air spaces through which water infiltrates into the underground. The ability of the rocks to absorb water depends on the number, size and shape of spaces within the rocks. Rocks with large spaces such as gravel allow more water to percolate through them compared to those with small spaces.

Vegetation cover.
In surfaces covered with vegetation cover, the percolation of water is high since the water is held by the vegetation for a long time. On bare surfaces, the rate of percolation is low since most of the water forms runoff

Water loss by evaporation and transpiration
When the atmosphere has a low moisture content, it encourages a high rate of evaporation and transpiration. This reduces the amount of water that could have infiltrated into the underground.
