Contour ploughing
This is a system of cultivation in which ploughing is aligned to the contours of the fields. Ploughing down the hill sides is not encouraged. The furrows in contour ploughing trap the water and hence prevent soil erosion.
Terracing
This is a type of cultivation in horizontal steps on the sides of hills to control soil erosion. The soils are held by earth banks. Terracing can be done by use of bench terraces. In places with deep gullies, barrier terraces are constructed to protect such land.
Planting cover crops.
Perennial crops like bananas, tea and coffee can be planted to prevent soil erosion. This is done in places where quick maturing crops like maize and beans are planted. These quick maturing crops are harvested and usually leave the soil unprotected.
