The first story is that of Grusha Vashnadze and the second one involves Adzak. Both stories begin in a Caucasian city ruled by a governor who serves under the Grand Duke. The governor has a child, Michael and a wife Natella. The governors brother, the fat prince stages a coup on the Easter Sunday. He beheads the governor and forces the governors wife to flee, leaving behind the child.
Grusha who was the maid, hides the child from the fat prince, saving him.She runs away from the city heading to the Northern mountains. She arrives at her brothers house and only allowed to live there over the winter season and after the winter to look for a husband to marry her as she can not survive in that community without a husband. The illegitimate child arouses questions and that is why she is married to Jussup. Simon Shashava returns and learns that Grusha is married. He becomes more annoyed when he sees Grusha with a child whom he thinks that he is Grusha's child.Michael is immediately taken back to the city.
The second story is about Judge Adzak. Grand Duke saves his life,on realizing that he will be called a traitor,he walks into the city and says that he saved Grand Duke's life. The fat prince says that his nephew is fit to be the judge ,but after a mock trial they choose Adzak.
Adzak rules several cases in favor of the poor and soon gains a reputation for supporting the poor.Th e Grand Duke appears after the war is over. Adzak is arrested and the soldiers want to behead him though the Grand Duke.
Adzak goes back to see to Grusha's case, the case between Grusha and Natella Abashwili on who the real mother of Michael is.He finally decides that the child belongs Grusha after drawing the chalk circle and asking them to pull the child and Grusha refuses to pull. This finally brings the two stories to one.

Read the extract below From the River and the Source by Margaret A.Ogola and answer the questions that follow
(Solved)
The crowd hissed, such a thing was unheard of,Didn't a man own a woman's body and soul?Marriage was sacred and chik' saw to it that it remained that way through by a series of taboos that made it almost impossible to sever the union. However the insult had been great. To accuse someone of juok',witchcraft, even in jest was an unforgivable crime, and there had been precedents,if the woman and her people were determined enough to get separation. The people of Yimbo were a proud lot and their love for their daughter was known all round for they always came out in massive support of her at various ceremonies and functions. The only saving grace would be the high esteem in which they held their son in law ,Owour Kembo the chief.
"And where might he be?"inquired someone,so taken up had they been by Nyar Yimbo's oratory that they had failed to notice his absence."He went to a friends's funeral the day before yesterday and is due back today" Meanwhile i will teach that she wolf a lesson"This from Otieno her brother in law.She looked at him straight in the eye and hissed" just you dare!"He retreated at the pure venom in her eyes.Besides,he was afraid of his brother who had added scandal to all his other sins by falling to ever lay a finger on his wife.
She left without further ado and her children, forgotten in the confusion ran after her. This would never do.She turned and gently but firmly ordered them to go back and await their father's return.
"But mother......"started the argumentative Obura."No buts!just go back and do as i tell you."She left them and went swiftly on her way.The crowd stood mesmerized for a while before departing also.
