Dictionary.com defines civic responsibility as the responsibilities of a citizen. Under the constitution becomes a Kenyan citizen by birth and registration. There are certain rights and duties that a person has as a citizen. Good citizenship in very important for the country’s development. Therefore Kenyans have the following responsibilities:
Every citizen should be obedient. First of all they should obey the law, this promotes social cohesion and people are able to live in peace. Whether you like a law or not one should obey it but since we live in a democratic country there are ways one can complain and effect change. There are constitutional ways of getting rid of bad laws or even changing them. By obeying the laws one is able to avoid committing crimes and the society is usually in order.
Patriotism is the most important element of a good citizen as it is an expression of one’s love for the country and the willingness to defend it against enemies. I think Kenyans are the most patriotic people in this country. This has been exhibited through the sporting fraternity and through the Kenya Defense Forces. Kenyan’s cheered their athletes in the just concluded 2012 Olympics and continued to support them even after the dismal performance. Most Kenyans if not all claimed to be proud of their country in spite of the embarrassing situation. We have seen how the Kenya Defense Force is protecting our country against the Al-shabaab and they are ready to die for their country and the people. This is the true spirit of patriotism. Accepting our country’s wrongs is being patriotic to prevent cases of wars.
A good citizen respects other people. Respect is a two way thing, if you respect others will they also treat you with respect. This will enable you

to respect public property which includes schools, hospitals, parks, vehicles, buildings to name a few. If people destroy public property they are the ones will suffer since they will not enjoy these facilities and will have to pay more tax to enable the government to raise the money for the replacement and reparation. Respect for private and public property ensures proper utilization of resources. Citizens should uphold the fundamental rights and freedoms in the constitution. Protecting the environment is a civic responsibility on every citizen.
A citizen has a duty to participate in developmental projects. One can volunteer in a number of projects such as health centres, agricultural schemes, building of schools among many others. One can volunteer their skills or make monetary contributions. This promotes economic development and improves the lives of fellow citizens who are not privileged. Public participation also involves taking part in national celebrations such as labor day, mashujaa day Christmas, to mention but a few.
Citizens are expected to exercise their democratic rights through voting. This ensures that people elect the right leaders for the country and people are represented fairly. Also one has to exercise this right in a transparent and peaceful manner to avoid incidences such as the 2007 post election violence. Also people should not sell their votes to anyone. It is also important to attend public meetings to be informed on the government issues and to raise matters that need their attention.
Citizens have an obligation to ensure that the legislature, executive and judiciary do their work properly in serving the country. This promotes an equitable society.
Loyalty is the icing on the cake as it protects the all the country’s interest. As a loyal citizen one should never do anything to harm the country such as engaging in corrupt activities.
