Summary

ABSTRACT
World wide it is estimated that diarrhoeal diseases are the second most common cause of deaths among children aged 0-5 years after malaria (WHO, 2012).The study to determine factors contributing to diarrhoeal diseases among children age 0 – 5 years in Migori county referral Hospital was a descriptive Cross – sectional design survey. It targeted all under-fives in the hospital both in the out-patient department and in-patient department. A questionnaire survey was conducted with 100 respondents interviewed. The data was then analyzed manually using calculators and presented using tables, pie charts, histograms and bar graphs. The sample size was obtained using Fisher’s et al formulae of 1998 of population less than 10,000. The study was done between the month of November and December 2017. Its objectives were to establish the predisposing factors to diarrhoeal diseases in under-fives, prevalence rate of diarrhoeal diseases in under-fives, to determine level of knowledge of parents/guardians on child-feeding and environmental sanitation and to come up with preventive measures of diarrhoeal diseases in children between aged 0-5 years. The majority of the respondents were aged between 15-19 years (40%). A significant 48% of the respondents claimed to be single. Among those who were interviewed majority of their children were between ages 6-12 months (42%) and most of them were first born (38%). The study findings further revealed that a significant 42% had never gone to school. Majority of them were farmers (43%) and did complementary feeding to their children at two months (58%). The study further revealed that 47% got their domestic water from the river, 48% never treat it at all and a significant 49% had no way of disposing human waste. The study therefore concluded that young parenthood age, single parenthood, lack of adequate education poverty and lack of adequate knowledge on child-feeding and environmental sanitation are the major predisposing factors of diarrhoeal, proper child feeding and good environmental sanitation. The study further recommends that the government has to promote national policies and investments that support case management of diarrhoea and its complications as well as increasing access to safe drinking water and sanitation and moreover to train health workers especially at community level.
