1. INTRODUCTION TO ICT
Concept of ICT
ICT is an acronym for “information communications technology”. Many people ask what is ICT.
1. Information – (or data) in paper or electronic format
2. Communication – in person or electronically (electronic communications), in writing or voice, telecommunications, and
broadcasting
3. Information technology (IT) – including software, hardware and electronics
4. Communications technology – including protocols, software and hardware
An ICT system involves a storage device where information is stored – maybe a hard drive or a content management system. This could be
referred to as information technology.
An ICT system would be communications technology. For example fibre, Internet protocol, or VOIP.
Information or data refers to data in a file in pdf format.
Communication, involves for example, a data message, or a voice or data packet.
Information is stored using information technology and communication reaches the recipient through communications technology.
Functions of ICT
Information Communications Technology (ICT) is an acronym for information and communication technology.
Advantages of ICT
The advantages of ICT in teaching are enormous.
1. Cost Effective
Video conferencing reduces the cost of travel and accommodation. ICT has not only brought countries and individuals closer together, but
it has also enabled the global economy to become a single interdependent system for communicating.
2. Automation
ICT has enabled businesses to be automated, allowing clients to access a website or voicemail 24 hours a day, seven days a week. ICT has
also aided in the automation of corporate procedures, allowing organizations to be restructured to be more cost effective.
3. Bridging the cultural divide
Increased access to technology has aided in bridging the cultural divide by allowing individuals of other cultures to communicate with one
another and exchange views and ideas, thereby raising awareness and lowering prejudice.
4. Creation of new jobs
Perhaps the most significant benefit of information and communication technology has been the creation of new and exciting jobs.
Computers, their programs, and the Internet have opened up educational options that previous generations could not have.
5. Educational resources for teachers
Images can be simply used in teaching and improving student retaining memory via ICT. Teachers can use ICT to simply explain complex
structure, instructions, and guarantee that students understand them.
6. Upgraded Classrooms
Teachers may use ICT to build dynamic classrooms and make lessons more enjoyable for students.
7. ICT in education promotes student engagement and knowledge retention
Students become more engaged in their work when ICT is integrated into lessons. This is due to the fact that technology allows for many
ways to make it more engaging and entertaining to teach the same subjects in different ways. They will be able to remember knowledge
more effectively and efficiently as a result of their increased participation, according to experts.
