USE OF REMOTE SENSING AND GIS IN DISASTER MANAGEMENT
INTRODUCTION
Disaster is defined by the Advanced Oxford English Dictionary as, “sudden accident or a natural catastrophe that causes great damage or loss of life”, this can be naturally occurring or directly or indirectly caused by human activities. On the other hand, Disaster management is defined as the organization and management of resources and responsibilities for dealing with all humanitarian aspects of emergencies in particular preparedness, response and recovery in order to reduce the impact of the impacts of disaster (International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies). It is generally all the mechanisms that are put together in order to reduce the effects that are attributed from disasters and hazards e.g. destruction of critical infrastructures such as health services and roads. Most disasters experienced in the world occur naturally having the meteorological disasters leading (Huho, Julius M., Mashara, Janet N., Musyimi, and Peter N.).
These disasters include, floods, landslides, drought, tsunamis etc.
