Course Name: Certificate in Vocal Performance
Major Subject: Vocal Performance, Applied Vocal Science & Ear Training
Course Category: Certificate
Department: School of Music Performance
Duration & Structure: 4 Terms (Intensive Performance Track). Classes run on a strict 1-to-1 private coaching policy where every student works with an assigned vocal coach and a dedicated audio workstation. Students have the strategic option to take consecutive Double Sessions to maximize uninterrupted studio tracking time.
Tuition Fee: Ksh 36,000 per term
Detailed Course Outline/Structure:
Term 1: Vocal Anatomy, Breath Mechanics & Foundational Pitch Precision
Applied Vocal Physiology & Safety: Understanding the physical vocal mechanism (laryngeal placement, vocal fold adduction, diaphragm support, and the role of intercostal muscles). Developing proper posture and anti-strain techniques.
Breath Management & Support Systems: Developing consistent subglottic air pressure through specialized diaphragmatic breathing drills, managing measured air release, and extending vocal phrase suspension.
Pitch Precision & Tone Placement: Eliminating tracking pitch errors through rigorous scale intervals. Mapping the physical resonators (chest voice, pharyngeal placement, and head voice) to achieve a balanced, resonant tone.
Foundational Music Theory & Sight-Singing: Introduction to reading standard music notation (treble and bass clef). Understanding time signatures (2/4, 3/4, 4/4), decoding basic intervals, and translating visual sheet music into real-time vocalized pitches.
Term 2: Vocal Registers, Belting Mechanics & Dynamic Articulation
Register Blending & Mixed Voice: Bridging the vocal break ("il passaggio") to seamlessly transition between chest and head registers, creating a unified, strong "mixed voice" across the user's entire vocal range.
Healthy Belting & Resonance Metrics: Mastering safe commercial belting techniques, maximizing acoustic resonance without laryngeal constriction, and introducing dynamic vocal expressions (crescendo, decrescendo, and accented delivery).
Diction, Enunciation & Vowel Modification: Training the articulators (tongue, lips, jaw) for crystal-clear text delivery. Mastering vowel modification techniques at high pitches to maintain tone quality and prevent strain.
Vocal Agility & Ornaments: Developing fast muscle response for intricate melodic runs, standard riffs, vocal turns, and trills used extensively in modern commercial music.
Term 3: Ear Training, Harmony Integration & Regional Kenyan Vocal Styles
Aural Dictation & Harmony Construction: Training the ear to isolate and hold complex harmony lines (thirds, fifths, and octaves) against a live primary lead vocalist or changing backing instrumentation.
Microphone Technique & Proximity Dynamics: Working professionally with dynamic and condenser studio microphones. Mastering physical proximity effects, managing popping plosives, and adjusting distance dynamically to match vocal volume shifts.
Afro-Fusion & Contemporary Pop Phrasing: Technical exploration of syncopated vocal pockets, rhythmic ad-libs, and unique emotional texturing used across modern Afro-fusion, Afrobeats, and local Kenyan urban genres.
Traditional and Gospel Accentuation: Mastering the powerful vocal projections, call-and-response mechanics, and intricate melismas required for fronting live Kenyan Praise & Worship ensembles and regional Ohangla/Benga traditional fusions.
Term 4: Advanced Seben Animation, Studio Vocal Engineering & Exit Board Exams
Advanced Lead Vocal Animation & Seben Projections: Masterclass on the high-energy vocal delivery, rapid-fire spoken callouts ("shouts"), and rhythmic chant animations essential for leading high-tempo Congolese Rhumba and Seben transition sequences.
Studio Recording In-Studio Etiquette: Managing multi-track session setups, singing cleanly with studio headphones alongside a digital click-track, handling real-time vocal comping layers, and understanding pitch correction software (Auto-Tune/Melodyne workflows).
Live Band Ensemble Coordination: Mastering stage performance logistics, using wireless hand-held systems, managing live stage monitor levels, configuring wireless in-ear monitor (IEM) systems, and directing live backing bands.
Vocational Performance Board Jury: Final comprehensive practical performance evaluation before the academic board. Students must perform a memorized classical/contemporary piece, execute rigorous agility runs, deliver a live local genre showcase (e.g., a live Afro-fusion lead or Seben animation sequence), and pass a real-time sight-singing test.
