Climate
The amount of rainfall received in an area determines the amount of water to be supplied to the land for irrigation. In case of very little rain, a lot of irrigation water is needed. When temperatures are high, there is also a high rate of evaporation from the irrigated land. Such areas therefore require a large supply of water to compensate for the high rate of evaporation.
Nature of the soil
The water retention capacity in any soil dictates the amount of water required for irrigation. Some soils like clay retain water for a long period of time while the sandy soils, which have a very low retention capacity, require a continuous supply of water.
Type of crops grown
The type of crops grown determine the amount of water to be supplied for irrigation. Different crops require varying amounts of water. For example, paddy rice is an aquatic crop that requires water throughout its growing period. Crops like vegetables grow in wet but well drained soils.
