The sum of two numbers x and y is 40. Write down an expression in terms of x for the sum of the squares of the two numbers.

X +y =40
Y=(40-x)
Therefore x2 + y2 =x2 +(40-x)2
=X2+40(40-x) –x(40-x)
=X2 +160-40x-40x+x2
=2x2 -80x +160
