Throughout the play, the elite come out as a powerful force for changing the society. The students and their lecturers play an important role in liberating the society from tyranny. Jusper and Mosese are good examples.
The university students are at the fore front in fighting for human rights. They demonstrate against the killing of Adika, one of them,in a protest against the influx of expatriates in the country amongst other issues.
The university students' role as masters of truth and justice is seen when Boss asks Jusper who appointed him spokesman of truth and justice.
The intellectuals play a crucial role in bringing about change in Kafira. Mosese is depicted as the patron of the struggle. When we first encounter him in jail,he is a disillusioned Philosopher who has turned him back to the world. This means that he has lost all his hope for the future. His hidden desire to exercise his hidden desire for politics is seen at the end of the play.He has already realized the power of the gun and is now ready to consolidate the power of the brain.
It is largely through the power of the elite that we are finally able to see change in Kafira. The Elite stage a play that exploits the inefficiency and corruption in the country,to mark the beginning of a new era.
The writer has used the elite to bring about change in Kafira by clearly showing that if the destiny of the country is left in the hands of the corrupt, selfish and cruel leaders like Mulili it will go to the dogs.
