The main problem in Kafira is as a result of leaders doing everything for selfish and personal interests.

Mulili sticks to the idea that he is Boss's cousin in order to gain material benefits. He once told Jere that he is the eye and the ear to Boss. This is during that time they were send the the government to go and stop the shaving ceremony of Doga and Nina because of their dead son. Mulili is very adamant to allow the old couple to go on with the ceremony because he has been promised acres of land and grade cattle by Boss when he stops the ceremony.Even in the entertainment committee he acts as boss's spy,he reports Kabito who is later killed in a planned road accident.

In the entertainment committee, the main concern of the committee members is the size of potato they will get as opposed to the service of the people. Kabito is a corrupt government official, he is surprised when he losses the milk tender to Mulili after spending the whole night being nice to people. He is later seen advocating for longer sitting hours in the committee so that the size of the potato can be increased.

Tumbo is seen to be a selfish man who believes in acquiring wealth despite the means. He loves talking about money and what it can buy.He tells Jusper that he could not have managed to build his block of estates if it were for empty talk,he gives Jusper only a third of the money for the play writing competition and takes two thirds. We all are aware that there was no competition.

Nicodemo is selfish and materialistic. At the end of the play,he is seen to only care about the size of the potato and not the output the committee is going to give. He is even heard asking whether the last day will be counted.

In conclusion,Imbuga has used several characters who are greedy, selfish and corrupt.
