In Kenya, schools may be broadly classified as either private schools or public ones. In another perspective, a major classification may be done in regards to whether the school is a boarding school or a day school. Based on the number of enrollments, most parents would prefer their children to be enrolled in day primary schools and proceed to boarding high schools. Each has his/her own reason but the most common one being that the child would be much more mature when joining high school. Therefore when they enroll in a boarding school at this age, they will be able to take care of themselves more efficiently and be independent.

There is a certain belief that when you take your child to a boarding school at an early age, then he/she must be stubborn and that you have found it difficult to keep up with such a behavior. To some extent, this may just be true as, for instance, countries such as USA have boarding schools set up for such children. In our country Kenya the reason may be different whatsoever. Most parents view that a boarding school offers the most conducive and almost distraction free environment for learning.

Also, some parents may both be working and busy that they decide to send their children to boarding school at an early age. When children are sent to boarding school at a later age, it comes with advantages. For starters, most boarding schools are of one gender hence the elimination of the distraction brought about by early relationships. Putting boarding schools side by side with day schools, the former come as an undisputed winner in the academics section. Not much proof is needed as it is evident that those who are enrolled in boarding schools mostly outperform their counterparts

of the same school stature in day schools.

Let us now look at the advantages that boarding schools have over day schools.

1. More preps time.
Boarding schools have more preps time than day schools. This extra time can be used for conducive finish of assignments, teachers to make up for lost time and the dictating and copying of notes left by the teacher.
2. Students become more responsible.
Responsibility is portrayed in terms of doing personal chores as well as the proper management of the pocket money given in order to reach the next visiting period.
3. Students are not that much affected by bad weather conditions.
Unlike day schools where bad weather conditions, say heavy rains, may halt certain activities in school, boarding schools cope relatively better with such. This is because the dormitories are usually not that far from classes as opposed to the long distance from home to school in day schools.
4. Minimal distractions.
Distractions such as television, relationships and parties or so are greatly minimized for those enrolled in boarding schools. For day scholars, the temptation of watching their favorite programmes on television after school may be too strong to resist. This results to the loss of precious time that would have otherwise been used for studying. Also, on weekends, day scholars may be tempted to go to entertainment spots which in the end may have its own hard hitting consequences.
5. Great reduction in chores.
The only major chore in boarding schools is the washing of clothes. Other chores which are done by day scholars are greatly reduced or even completely eliminated. Such chores as washing of dishes, cleaning of the house, going to the grocery, cooking and other general home chores is what am talking about here. Clearly, boarding schools have a number of advantages compared to day schools. This may result to boarders performing well than their day school counterparts.

However, this is not to say that day schools lose it all! In fact, they also have their own merits, even if most don't have that much strong relation to academics. For starters, home sickness is never there for day scholars as opposed to boarders who may be thinking about home at one time or another. If we look at a more serious advantage, the main advantage that a day school has over a boarding school is that it is more affordable. This is due to certain reasons such as provision of food, sleeping place and other general expenses that boarding schools have. Its your choice, choose the best.
