A perm, commonly known among the ladies as 'curly kit' is a far-reaching chemical process into the structure of the hair. It is practically impossible to reverse and that is why it is called a 'permanent wave'. Chemical relaxing and perming are the two different chemical processes used to achieve different styles. A relaxer is used when the hair is needed straight, whereas a perm involves the process of straightening the hair then curling it using rods.

The main advantages of perming are the ease with which it can be maintained at home and that it makes hair manageable. A perm on short, well maintained hair could look flattering on mature persons. Coupled with a good haircut, permed hair can look good on male persons, especially the younger ones. It can also be colored for a more dramatic effect.

A permanent wace chemical works in different stages. It first penetrates the inside of the hair shaft and opens the sulphur bonds (chemical structures which give hair its stability), making the hair soft and manageable. The softened hair fibres take the shape of the rods. It is good to always ensure the hair is thoroughly rinsed out of the wave medium after it has done its work. The hair is then fixed or neutralized using a neutralizer, which closes the sulphur bonds making the hair stable again.

Below are some considerations to put in mind when perming hair;

1. The perm type must be suitable for the hair type, its condition and style.

2. Consider what is desired-small curls, generous waves, soft waves or bounce and volume.

3. Care and attention is needed to maintain the perm.

4. The hair will appear shorter after perming. Damaged ends should be trimmed.

5. Do not assume that perming makes styling unnecessary.

The following tips will help you care for the permed hair;

-A

fresh perm should not be brushed or combed. Avoid stretching the hair unnecessarily, and it shouldn't be washed for the first two days.

-Take great care when washing the hair. Be very gentle and use a wide toothed comb to untangle a wet perm and avoid pulling.

-Avoid anything that dries the hair out too much, example wind, too much sun and chlorinated water.

-Whenever possible, leave the hair to dry naturally or use a blow drier with a diffuser.

-Use a very mild shampoo with gentle ingredients and also use corrective conditioning treatments.

-Do apply curly activator gel for well-defined curls but avoid using too much because it can be messy on clothes and skin.
