Pre-requisites:
Purpose: To provide the learners with an understanding of bank assets and liabilities management strategies, techniques, tools so as to equip participants with essential knowledge of analysis of bank profitability, the effect of liability mix and capital level on profitability as well as the management of bank assets portfolio.
Expected Learning Outcomes of the Course
By the end of the course unit the learners should be able to:-
i) Measure bank profitability and cost of funds
ii) Efficiently manage bank assets
iii) Explain regulatory capital requirements
iv) Manage risks
Course Content:
Measuring bank profitability; interest and non-interest revenues, cost of funds, return on assets and interest spread, different approaches in balance sheet management; Managing bank assets; the loan portfolio, the securities portfolio, liquidity management-assets; Managing bank liabilities; sources of funds, structured deposits, impact of interest rate changes on net interest spread, liquidity management-liabilities; Capital; types of capital, capital adequacy, new
regulatory capital standards; Cross industry comparisons; insurance, investment management, pension liabilities management; Managing interest rate risk; types of interest rate risk, gap analysis, duration analysis, hedging interest rate risk

Individual assignment; Case studies
