1.0 Overview
This chapter covers the background of the study; problem statement, objectives of the study, research questions, significance and justification of the study, the scope as well as limitations and the conceptual framework of the study.

1.1 Background of the study
Tourism is both highly vulnerable to climate change while at the same time contributing to it, United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) 2008. Threats for the sector are diverse, including direct and indirect impacts such as more extreme weather events, increasing insurance costs and safety concerns, water shortages, biodiversity loss and damage to assets and attractions at destinations, among others(UNWTO 2008).UNWTO indicated that continued climate-driven degradation and disruption to cultural and natural heritage negatively affected the tourism sector, reduce the attractiveness of destinations and lessen economic opportunities for local communities; as natural and cultural resources are the foundations for the tourism sector’s competitiveness.
