Abortion is the termination of pregnancy and is forbidden by law unless when necessary under certain circumstances, example when the life of the mother is threatened by the pregnancy. Various religions also oppose abortion because it is the work of God and only God to give and take lives. Recently there have been a rise in reported cases of abortion especially in secondary schools and colleges as young girls partake this risky procedure to get rid of unwanted pregnancies. Research has revealed that in every 100 live births there are 29 abortions while the Demographic and Health survey revealed that 44.5 per cent of births among women aged 15-49 in Kenya are unplanned. As technology advances moral qualities lower day by day in our societies. Below are some of the major causes of abortion in Kenyan schools.

1. Fear of loosing career dreams. For most girls in Kenyan schools pregnancy marks the end of their careers. Once a girl falls pregnant she is forced to leave school in order to nature the pregnancy and raise the child. Very few have the chance of giving birth and resume studies. It is for this reason that many girls opt to get rid of the pregnancy and avoid the shame of leaving school. Some take this risky procedure without the knowledge of the parents nor the tutors which posses an increase in the risks involved.

2. Unprotected sexual relationships. At adolescence stage young people experience sexual urges therefore being forced to indulge in unprotected sexual relationships without giving it a thought leading to unwanted pregnancies. For most of these young couples abortion is the only option of solving this life puzzle without considering life itself and conceptual risks involved. Establishment of an education program on abortion matters could be used to educate young couples

on the importance of protected sex and risks involved in abortion.

3. Abortion procedure is offered at a cheap price. Nowadays the services of abortion can be accessed at a price of Ksh 2,500-5,000 which is quite affordable to many girls. Backdoor clinics offer these services at cheap prices therefore attracting young school girls who desperately need to get rid of unwanted pregnancies. We should also consider that most of the doctors attending to these patients are not professionals therefore posing another great risk during the abortion procedure.

4. Nonsense parents. Most parents won't tolerate such news of their high school or college girl being impregnated while at school. In order to save themselves this hell, abortion becomes the only option.

5. I am yet ready to become a parent. This is the case in most of our colleges and universities. Many people are not ready to become parents therefore making abortion the only choice to avoid that path. Girls sometimes abort without the knowledge of their boyfriends simply because they don't want to be forced to keep the coming babies.
