If you have decided that you want to connect your computer to the Internet directly via an Internet service provider, you have to choose among many offerings. Many ISPs are usually what are known as retail ISPs; that is, they deal primarily with individuals and small businesses example Safaricom and Orange in Kenya. To get to know about all the ISPs in the world, log on to www.thelist.com, where the most comprehensive and useful list of ISPs is.
Below are some tips that will help you choose the best and appropriate ISP:

1. Look for an ISP whose access is only a local phone call away example Safaricom and Orange. Getting Internet service from ISPs which are abroad example in a country like Canada will make it difficult for you to reach them in the case of a problem.

2. If you plan on using one of the faster access methods, such as ISDN, DSL, or cable modem, you need to look for an ISP that offers such services.

3. Ideally, find a service provider with software that will automate the registration process. Configuring the right connections on your own is not a trivial task.

4. Make sure your contract includes terms that let you opt out if your ISP wants to transfer your account to another different ISP or is sold out.

5. The cost. Some ISPs charge more than others, it's therefore good to choose an ISP than suites your financial status and don't fall for an unrealistic bargain, you will notice that a cheap service is oversubscribed, under-powered, and prone to busy signals.
