Preface
This course is concerned with the way we think with the aim of improving and becoming better people.
While, as human beings, we are born with capacity to think, majority people do not think correctly. This is
evident especially in our expression of regrets especially when we have made mistakes in our actions; the
actions which are consequences of how we think. Action/praxis presupposes theory/thinking. The course
aims at training the mind to think effectively. The mind, like any other organ of the body, can be trained to
function effectively. This is the main aim of this course. It will inculcate in the minds of learner’s some
important canons/rules appropriate for good thinking. Logic, will play important role here.
The way we think includes any natural activity of the mind or the content of the same. These includes our
reasoning (as the process by which me make inferences/conclusions from given information), the attitudes
that we have, our mind-sets, decision making and beliefs which are the foundation of our actions. To think
about the way, we think includes three important intellectual:

Analysis – the breakdown of thinking into its component’s parts for the purposes of understanding.
Understanding our thoughts and those of others is a requisite in understanding and appreciating or even
challenging our behaviours.

Evaluation – the process by which we determine the worthiness or unworthiness of our own thinking and
that of others. This is done on basis of certain standards of thinking. This activity helps us establish whether
a given thought system is worth basing our lives or it is outdated and therefore need be abandoned.

Transforming our thoughts – this implies a change in the way we think. This presupposes willingness to
be guided by reason and possession of certain mental dispositions called intellectual virtues as well as
creative mind. Once we establish that there is something wanting in our thought systems, creative thinking
is called upon to provide alternative beliefs. Any creative alternative must be critically analysed and
evaluated to make sure that our new thought meets intellectual standards and is productive in the sense of
enhancing our wellbeing.
It is worth to note that a critical thinker should try as much as possible to avoid certain factors that act as
hindrances to clear thinking. This presupposes a clear grasp of them, how they act and how they can be
remedied. In overall, for our thinking to be good and effective, it must be rational, logical and ethical.
The necessity to think about the way we think is arises out of the fact that we are what we think i.e, what
we do or avoid doing is based on the way we think, and ultimately our philosophies. This has been
variously expressed.
