APP 201: POLITICAL THOUGHT
1.0: Introduction to political thought
1.1 Definition of political thought
According to Sabine and Thorson (1973: 3) political thought can be defined as an intellectual tradition whose history consists of the evolution of men’s thoughts about political problems over time. It is the disciplined investigation of political problems which has over the centuries attracted inquiries from political philosophers such as Plato, Aristotle, St Augustine, Machiavelli, Karl Marx and many others.
? Political Theory is one of the core components of Political science.
? It analyzes and interprets the foundations of political life and evaluates its principles, concepts and institutions.
? Political theory studies classical and modern texts of political philosophers. It also examines democratic theory, theories of liberty and government and constitutionalism.
? Political theory has four components; history of political ideas, political philosophy, positive political theory and epistemology.
? It also includes analysis of central concepts such as liberty, equality and justice or politics, the state, power and democracy.
1.2 Political Theory and Political Science
? Political theory is a distinct field within the discipline of political science.
? Political theorists focus on theoretical underpinnings as opposed to empirical claims about the nature of politics.
? Normative political theory is concerned with questions about such concepts as justice, equality and rights.
? Historical political theory engages political philosophers from the past (Thucydides and Plato to the present e.g. Wendy Brown)
? Political theory is engaged with current political issues and is self-reflective about political life. It has a strong ethical component and develops alternative conceptualizations of how we might organize social and political relations.
? In western political theory, theorists focus on the golden age in Greece and Rome, then the modern period from Machiavelli and Hobbes through Marx and Nietzsche to the contemporary era.
? Political theory ascertains how we got to where we are politically and gives an explanation as status quo/change in the political process.
? It is concerned with deliberation about the kind of world we want to have and judging how far and through what actions and at what risk we can realistically hope to move this world as it now stands towards the ideal we want to achieve.
