Sampling and Estimation

Question 1
With a sample size of 400, the calculated standard error is 2 with a mean of 120.

Required
a. What is the sample standard deviation?
b. What are the 95% confidence limits for the population mean
c. What sample size would be required so that we could be 95% confident that the population mean is within 3.5 of the sample mean

Question 2
A study conducted by a cigarette manufacturer found that 45% of the adult population are regular smokers. Determine the probability that in a random sample of 1,000 adults the number of smokers will be

a. Less than 440
b. Exactly 420
c. Between 410 and 490

Question 3
The mean length of the life of a certain energy saving bulb is 41.5 hours with a standard deviation of 2.5 hours.

Required
What is the probability that a simple random sample of size 50 drawn from this population will have a mean life of between 40.5 hours and 42 hours

Question 4
Let x represent the height of an individual selected at random from a population of adult male students. Suppose x is normally distributed with mean =170 cms and standard deviation= 5cms, if a random sample of size n=25 is taken from this population, what is the probability that the sample mean, x will differ from the population mean by less than 3 cms?

Question 5
Scores of an aptitude test are normally distributed with mean u=160 and standard deviation=20. If a sample size of 16 is taken and the value of x computed, determine the probability that
a. x will exceed 164
b. x will be less than 150

Question 6
A sample of 100 voters chosen at random contained 45% who supported party A. Find 95% confidence limits for the proportion of all voters who supported this party

Question 7
A sample of 100 part time students at a polytechnic showed that 25 dropped out in first year of study

a. Calculate a 95% confidence interval for the drop-out rate of the population of all the comparable students

b. What sample size is necessary to give the confidence in (a) a precision of +or- 5%?

Question 8
Two classes are taught the same subject by the same lecturer. At the end of a given period, a test is administered in which the average score for the first class was found to be 52.4% with a standard deviation of 14.6%. The second class had a mean scope of 49.8% with a standard deviation of 16%. The first class had a student population of 85 while the second class were 60 students. Construct a 99% confident interval for the difference in mean score for the two classes and state whether the difference is significant.
