from Section B

(Compulsory)
Explain why issues of race have been a frequent concern of Caribbean literature. Drawing from your reading of both drama and poetry from the Caribbean, discuss how selected authors have approached this concern in their work. (You may include references to McKay's poems in this answer). (30 marks).

Section A: Drama

Trevor Rhone: "Old Story Time." Rhone's play Old Story Time had a very successful run of245 days when it was first staged in Jamaica. Write a critique of the play showing those qualities - thematic and dramatic - which you think would have made it appealing to a Jamaican audience.(20 marks).

Derek Walcott: "Ti-Jean and His Brothers." What is allegory? Expound on Walcott's use of the allegorical mode in "Ti-Jean and His Brothers" including the effects of this mode on the meaning that the play projects to a postcolonial audience.(20 marks).

Derek Walcott: "Dream on Monkey Mountain." Discuss Walcott's dramatization of the idea of dream or fantasy as a means of self- knowledge in this play. (20 marks).

Section B: Poetry

Edward Kamau Brathwaite: "Masks." The epitaph of the original publication of "Masks" is "Only the fool points at his origins with his left hand." How pertinent is this epitaph to the poem? Discuss the ways in which Brathwaite explores and dramatizes the interconnections between Africa and the diaspora in this poem. (20 marks).

Derek Walcott: "LaventiUe" / "A Far Cry from Africa." Discuss the contours of Walcott's worldview as elucidated in these two poems. (20 marks).
