QUESTION ONE
Define the following terms:
a) i) Simulation (2Marks)
ii) System (2 Marks)
iii) System State (2Marks)
iv) System Image (2 Marks)
v) Simulation Algorithm (2 Marks)
b) Describe any two tests carried out on random numbers. (4 Marks)
c) Describe the three main characteristics that describe congestion in a system. (6 Marks)
d) i) Use a congruential mixed random number generator with a = 11, c = 37, m = 319, Xo = 1777
to generate the first five random variates on the interval (0,1) (5 Marks)
ii) With the aid of a flow chart, explain the event-to-event time advance mechanism in a
discrete event simulation model. (5 Marks)
QUESTION TWO
a) Distinguish between verification and validation. (4 Marks)

b) Consider a single server queuing system. The system starts at time t=0. The arrival times are 0.2,
0.8, 1.0, 2.2, 2.9, 4.0 and 4.5. The departures are at times 1.4, 2.0, 3.2, 3.8, 4.2, 4.8 and 5.0.
Simulate this system for eight customers and hence estimate.
i) Average delay in queue. (4 Marks)
ii) Average number of clients in the queue. (5 Marks)
iii) Expected utilization of the server. (2 Marks)
c) State any six seasons that justify the need for using simulation. (6 Marks)
QUESTION THREE
a) Discuss how simulation and modeling can help a bank facing serious Congestion problems in the
banking hall overcome the problem. (9 Marks)
b) Giving an example in each case, describe the following methods of describing logic for discrete
event simulation.
i) Event – Oriented
ii) Activity – Oriented
iii) Process – Oriented (6 Marks)
c) State five capabilities of a good simulation language. (5 Marks)
QUESTION FOUR

QUESTION FIVE
a) With the aid of flow chart, describe the demand routine for the simulation of an inventory system.
(5 Marks)
b) Suppose that the number of major earthquakes occurring per month in a particular geographical
area is collected for 100 months and summarized in the table below:
Number of earthquakes per
month

Number of months 57 31 8 3 1
Test at 5% level of significance whether the earthquakes occur randomly and assume a
poison distribution. (8 Marks)
c) i) List and explain any three limitations of simulation models. (3 Marks)
ii) With examples, distinguish between deterministic and stochastic simulation models.
