Betrayal is the act humiliating someone by being disloyal or creating an environment of mistrust between individuals concerned and when the betraying party imagines he or she will gain by doing so.In Betrayal in the city by Francis Imbuga we encounter characters like Mulili, Jere, Boss and Nicodemo taking the center stage.
Mulili an ex-soldier and Jere betray each other. Both as agents of state are supposed to carry out any state orders when they are sent to stop the shaving ceremony of the old couples Nina and Doga after losing their son Adika. They disagree because Jere wants to allow the old couple to go on with the ceremony after realizing that Doga and his father Kaleka shared the same knife during circumcision. Jere therefore betrays the state by failing to effect the order. Jere therefore betrays the state by failing to effect the order.By extension he betrays Mulili for failing to support him in stopping the ceremony. Jere therefore removes a gun and shoots at Mulili.
Later, Mulili convinces the authorities to lock up Jere. It is worth to note that earlier, Mulili had helped Mustapha escape the authorities and Jere had kept silence never to tell anyone about it. Mulili therefore betrays Jere .
Nicodemo betrays Mosese when he plants a kilogram of opium in Mosese's car. This is to have him put away for speaking his mind during Adika's funeral. This disturbs him and haunts him on knowing that the prisoners are going to act the play for the visiting head of state and that they will sit with prisoners on the dias. This he says may see to it that Mosese is released.
Mulili though Boss's spy betrays and denounces him when asked by the acting prisoners if they are related. He claims that Boss is only a distant cousin and says that he can be shot for engaging in other ills and ruining the economy of Kafira and even killing Kabito.
All these characters have betrayed those people who closely matter to them, which causes distress and a negative consequence to the affected character.
